Open When Letters

I am not a crafter...

Lord help me, I want to be, but it doesn't come naturally to me. I have tried to express my "creativity" it a lot of ways: Jewelry making, crochet, knitting, paper crafting, cooking, etc. And to my surprise I have found some success with each of these. Although based on my continued struggles with weight loss, I would say cooking is my most successful endeavor!

So, with that in mind, this blog is my place to discuss my efforts in the various crafty type exercises.

One of my favorite and most successful crafts recently was a set of "Open When..." letters I made for my husband. If you are unfamiliar with these, just search them out on Pinterest and you will find a ton of different posts about them. Basically it is a set of letters that you write to a special someone in your life to be opened in special circumstances. I was REALLY short on funds but I wanted to do something special for my wonderful husband for Valentine's Day.

While I of course cant tell you what I wrote in each letter, as that is personal, I can tell you some of the extras I included with the letters. In each letter I wrote I also included at least one relevant bible verse

  • When you are feeling discouraged: several bible verses on staying strong.
  • When you are mad at me:  I included 2 Advil in a baggie with a label "I am a pain in the a$$"
  • When the kids are driving you nuts: Each of the girls wrote him a letter letting him know how much they appreciate him.
  • When you're having a bad day: On this one I bought him lunch - a $10 gift card to Chick-fil-a
  • When you need to know how much I love you: A large Dark Chocolate with Chili candy bar and put a sticker on it that said "Because I think you're hot!"
  • When you are bored: I downloaded and printed off some puzzles, like crosswords and Sudoku puzzles.
  • When you need a laugh: I picked out some jokes that I knew he would like from the internet and also included an absolutely hilarious picture of our cat and some silly pictures of our dogs.

All total this project cost me about $20, and $10 of that was the gift card for lunch and he loved his letters. Since I gave them to him he has opened 3 of the 10, and each time he has let me know how much they mean to him. I am just glad that I have the chance to let him know how much he means to me!

This would also be a great idea and project for other family members, especially teenagers! They may say they don't want the attention but getting that sign of love and assurance from their parents really does mean a lot to them. And this way they can open them in private and enjoy the feeling of being loved without being embarrassed!
